Fly Behavior
Design Intent
-
Include randomness for re-playability.
-
Give the player meaningful decisions to make.
System Overview
The flies spawn randomly within a 2D plane and randomly target a spot on another 2D plane opposite of where they start. The flies have a % chance when planning their path between the two points to communicate where they will go through by leaving a mark on the 2D plane where the player's Webb is.
By giving the player partial information I allowed them to make informed decisions and plan their web to catch the flies they can see.
By not giving complete information I incentivize spreading out the web to catch flies that are not telegraphed, while also providing moments of excitement when the player catches flies they didn't plan for.
Result and Learnings
In the end, the system worked as intended, allowing meaningful educated decisions, while requiring the players to adapt every round based on the randomness.

The colored dots show where the flies will pass.

This was a very fun project for me to work on. This is still my favorite of all games I have worked on as it feels like a simple concept with a lot of potential.
